Treblinka

“..Such places as Treblinka ..with their huge mass graves ..do not need that sort of odd local patriotism which is expressed by exaggerating ..number of victims in order to depict ..monstrosity of the mass murders committed there. Believe me ..over a 1,000,000 People killed in ..course of one year in one little place is a million times more than a 1,000,000 human brains could grasp. And even half a million would be much more than enough.” Rachel Auerbach.

Memory is always very important, but it must be held tight to, and with a steel like grip which seeks the resolution of the factual truth so as to maintain its integrity. As an Author on The Holocaust, and I have 6 Books already Published to suggest I am, I write on the concerns I hold over what has proved appalling to all our humanity. Since then, others have sought in-roads into which the pertinence of the Slaughter of 6,000,000 Jewish People is being gradually eroded. My 7th Book is due soon, and it reflects too on what hatred and intolerance achieved, abetted by an unconscionable World indifference. But, and on the subject of places like Treblinka, specific details are immensely important in not only recognising what we know, but more fundamentally, in ensuring what We more urgently need to know. We do not bury the remains of Family, and give over their marker for others to replace, or to have other markers placed alongside them needlessly. We cannot suppose all effort is done to employ the names of those who don’t belong at Treblinka, without seeing the deception it imposes. With the remains of those very Jews we have all lost but are unable to reconstruct their passage through time, they are there beneath the very grounds I have promised to walk upon. For certain, we must clearly acknowledge this space is rightly theirs, as is marked out by them in the ashes these Jews of Treblinka leave behind.

“..if Jews who witnessed such things were able to tell about it and I was able to write it down ..then other Jews should not spare their own feelings but should acquaint themselves with what in fact is only an infinitesimal fraction of that which was done to Jews.” Rachel Auerbach.

If then we are to sample the destructive capacity of each of these 6 Death Camps in Poland, we arrive at excesses way beyond what many would simply wish to be accepted. Here at this particular Aktion Reinhard Death Camp, that is Treblinka, which ran from July 22nd 1942, it is certain that some 700,000 Jews of Poland, or the more searched for 1,582,000 of Polish Jewry, where so many of these were extracted from Warsaw, transported through the gates of hell and were Slaughtered here. On August 2nd 1943, and with the Treblinka Jewish Uprising ushering in a more deliberate aim of Jewish resistance, the killing contract at this industrialised site of destruction was to be terminated. Prior though to November 17th 1943, when the Death Camp itself was finally liquidated, Jews from Bialystok and smaller communities still arrived to be ‘handled’, ‘resettled’, Gassed and Murdered. However, mass murder had already written itself into the annals of all that we survey from within The Holocaust, and it is transposed here in no small measure and from within Treblinka, that is particularly so.

“..I saw a flood once in ..mountains. Wooden huts ..torn from their foundations were carried above ..raging waters. One could still see lighted lamps in them ..Men ..Women ..Children in their cradles were tied to ..ceiling beams. Other huts were empty inside ..but one could see a tangle of arms waving from ..roof ..like branches blowing in ..wind waving desperately toward heaven ..toward ..river banks for help. At a distance ..one could see mouths gaping ..but one could not hear ..cries because ..roar of ..waters drowned out everything. And that s how ..Jewish masses flowed to their destruction at ..time of ..deportations. Sinking as helplessly into ..deluge of destruction. And if ..for even one of ..days of my life ..I should forget how I saw you then ..my People ..desperate and confused ..delivered over to extinction ..may all knowledge of me be forgotten and my name be cursed like that of those traitors who are unworthy to share your pain.” Rachel Auerbach.

As I sought to fulfil my promise, and stood across the two main Centres of Treblinka, it was not lost on me the vastness of this Jewish graveyard, which is remaining forever on Polish soil. I was led particularly to the memorial stone for Sokoly’s Jews, an almost directed intervention, even a spiritual encounter which I have an agnostic and reasoned cause to doubt. But! Sokoly, and the Jewish 4 year Child murdered by hate filled poles there, holds a particular place in my earnest endeavours for all the Jews lost to the same calibre of hatred we come to recognise, be that here in Treblinka, or from amongst the stones which detail losses in places like Sokoly. So as I continue my journey, as directly and focused as possible, so as to deliver my truth to all that history must mean, I am troubled by what some in Poland see as either reverential or necessary to The Holocaust endeavour. It is certain that there were no more major transports which would now arrive at Treblinka, and meanwhile, the evisceration of all, or any trace of the murderous undertaking here would have to be completed. Though Sk1005 operated, Odilo Globocnik who controlled the effort here, and at Belzec, Sobibor, and even Majdanek, sought to prize his fiefdom and plunder, and away from prying eyes.

“..we never meant to wish for life beyond our time. We only wished for time to live as ..Lord had designed. Being snuffed out by murdering Nazis ruined ..design so we pray to someday return to reclaim our stolen time. I hope we shall meet again.” Rachel Auerbach.

But the Earth, nor its soil can completely hold back the hidden truth which lies beneath and nor can it be changed by monolith’s to evidences which do not exist. The sheer weight of testimony, its evidence and the memory which will all align to expand Treblinka’s story, will not be short-changed by diffusive efforts to act without scientific reasoning. So, as we deliberate, and we acknowledge that at a kill rate of 25,000 Jews to be Slaughtered per day, this would see these efforts, all to extinguish the Jews, and see their presence completely eviscerated, this could be done within a 28 to 60 day period, a 2 Month period at most. It more than intensifies our reliance upon only what truth brings to bear in this particular arena od death and destruction. The truth will not be swayed by another’s preference for what will diminish a Jewish presence that is more substantial than certainty allows. With such a capacity that was available to the murder apparatus at Treblinka, and to the body of killing experts here, all who were willing to achieve every arrivals extermination, and were competently able to do so, and yet, this is apparently not enough to allow the disparity in truth to be exercised.

“..few Jewish writers ..scholars ..artists are still alive that we can count them on ..fingers of both hands. ..since we can’t be sure that they will survive ..I feel a sacred obligation to describe their fate. ..who was killed by a bullet ..struck down in an epidemic ..perished in ..flames of .. burning Ghetto ..who died at Treblinka .. Chelmno ..or ..familiar Streets ..of ..native City. Here ..a few names ..there ..a list of addresses pulled from a mass grave. ..a few rays of light shining on a few faces from .. anonymous multitudes of .. murdered. As long as I keep going ..though lost in a vast void ..engulfed in a fog of unswept tears ..I will remember ..I will record.” Rachel Auerbach.

We clearly have estimates which wish to restrict not just the capacity to kill, but the very presence of those Jews who were destroyed here. The same distorted story appears in each of the other 5 Death Camps in Poland, all designed for the strict purpose of denying life to every Jewish transport sent there. So what now can there be in repurposing the site, so as to name those who were never destroyed at such a space, a place so murderous which Treblinka truly is, as it still seeks to taunt us with its ritual endeavours. Can it be an essential amongst those seeking to promote an agenda which not only disperses from Treblinka a wholly, or more largely Jewish presence, but wishes to confuse the steady stroke of research in order to disseminate falsehoods about the place? Such distortion as would commit a slur on all of history, must never be placed within an arena that would diminish and tarnish any effort at remembrance of such a murderous effort which is The Holocaust.

“..In ..past I had written that a retrospective moral appraisal of Jewish life in ..Ghetto would regard only ..armed resistance movement as more important that ..upsurge of ..life of ..spirit ..of cultural creativity. ..I realize ..armed resistance and cultural activism ..not distinct from one another but two sides of ..same coin ..an affirmation of life in ..face of death and a part of our struggle for human dignity ..beauty ..wisdom .. strength ..spirit.” Rachel Auerbach.

I am currently reviewing and revisiting the Polish Pogroms against the Jewish People and time and time again I come across names which repeat themselves throughout that search. But! I would considerate it totally illegitimate to remove the horrors that took place in Jedwabne, or Radzilow to place such records at the Cemetery belonging only to those Jews destroyed within Treblinka itself. It is irreverent and deeply disrespectful to memory, distorting all of History as it does so to make effort of doing such an injustice to lost memory as we perceive it related to the Jewish losses. Even the presence of crosses toward where Jewish Memory resides, would placate the very hatred of murderous antisemitism which seals a Jewish fate here. Such cultural vandalism will forever stain the history of Poland, without ever adding to the historical, and necessary scientific evidential truth which in history binds us to its legacy. The Holocaust is a lesson to be learned from, and is as compelling of a sought after knowledge as to why so many complied with The Final Solution of The Jewish Question. Within Poland, all of which added to what consigned more than 6,000,000 Jews to annihilation is certified within spaces like Treblinka. Add that to the 3,550,000 of whom are Polish Jewry, and as many as 1,582,000 of these are Polish Jews from surrounding areas, including Bialystok, and Warsaw, and we have much that must be carried forward judicious in our further search for the answers to what History must not be contaminated by.

“..I regard what I’m writing ..as a draft. I have ..stay alive ..I will .. return to this text ..correct ..provide more information ..reread ..works of ..murdered writers ..compare facts ..rethink some conclusions. ..to complete ..project.” Rachel Auerbach.
