The Polish regime which emerged after Jozef Piludski’s death in 1935 , found favour with Hitler’s continuing amplification of anti-Jewish sentiment. Poland , for its part, enacted laws to refute any Polish Jewish status within Poland and it activated statutes which limited the Polish Jewish presence to mere subservience. Poland then restricted Polish Jewish businesses to vassals of Polish interest, and with all manner of Laws, which could well have been adopted straight from the tenets of Hitler’s Nuremberg Race Laws, these were adapted and engineered to specifically deny any Polish Jewish hegemony or reliance upon the Polish state. The corrupted values of human decency are evident wherever the Polish Jews and all of European Jews are confronted by what Hitler pointed to.

It is essential also to remember that what originated in Germany, was conducted throughout all of Europe, more particularly within Poland. This is all aiming toward a confrontation with every fibre of what society used to have considered was civilised humanity. That such an assault as has never been witnessed before, and in all of history, should warn us of confusing the hatred of national socialism with any other hatred. The strength of any Nation belongs to the body of the People, and if that community espouses an inward looking and selfish consideration, it goes beyond the bounds of moral efficacy. All of the People, and where this equates to the values of a Socialism which recognises an equanimity which belongs to All, and not just to the few, we do not separate out any People, and here in a microcosm of study, the Jewish People, neither by any measure nor design.
June 16th 1937 “..No place for Jews in Poland.” General Lucjan Zieligowski.
During August 1937 there are 350 incidents of physical assaults against Polish Jews that are recorded in this month, and within Poland alone. There is a direct threat now, and it emerges from Hitler, which was felt immediately by the Jews of both Germany and Austria. This was a terminally escalating position heading toward the very terms in which Hitler encompassed the complete destruction of the Jewish People, and wherever he met with them, as is assessed from within die Endlosung der Judenfrage.
Thursday October 21st. 1937 “..returning Jewish emigrants will be sent to concentration camps.” Heinrich Himmler.
On December 14th. 1937 Poland considers its territorial solution for its Jewish Community, and The Madagaskar Plans is first muted. At this time we perhaps recognise why, while in 1938 alone, 40% of all Property in Warsaw was Polish Jewish owned with 40% of all non-Jewish Poles employed in Polish Jewish owned businesses and industrial concerns. 80% of the skilled workforce in Poland were Polish Jews, and a certain non-Jewish resentment kept resurfacing. In this progression, from a hate filled narrative to murderous deeds, I would suggest here in just 3 terms of reference all that might well spell out what the Jewish People of all of Europe faced. Tragically too, what came to fruition is set to condemn the Jews of Europe to a systematic extermination process unprecedented in all of History. In all which ultimately failed the Jewish People, in such headlines as exist, it will haunt the whole of humanity for eternity.

In November 1937, Eichmann makes his way to the Holy Land as The Final Solution of the Jewish Question was being considered and planned. The Jewish People assessed their position within civilisations period of enlightenment, they were ill-prepared for what followed. The fact is, all of humanity couldn’t juggle with the concept of such a devastating deed as the Extermination of a People, simply because of their Jewish status. After Hitler had sought, and then achieved power, all of this was to be translated into a direct and frontal assault upon all Jewish presence and existence. It is not then such an enormous leap in any sense, let alone a rhetorical one, when German Jewry felt under imminent threat. The very fact that German Jews were to seek out emigration, would even pay Hitler a bonus. In fact, before Hitler acted out his physical threat, the imminent threat to the Jews had already been more than postured as a regulated and proposed death sentence. But in the World outside Hitler’s sphere of influence, who would take in Jews as the future refugees they were soon to become.

So if we have now made the leap, and for some German Jews who sought to get abroad, it is certain for the many German Jews left behind, there is a constant physical and ritual abuse to deal with. Even prior to their physical destruction, we have the merest suggestion, while The Evian Conference comes to the fore to seemingly ensure the Jewish in the World abandonment is more complete. Never forget, Hitler had already alerted the World that he considered the Jewish Question was of little consideration to the World in general. This Hitlerite assertion was to confirm that the Jewish People were thus, wholly Expendable. The Canadian Prime Minister added to that PERCEPTION, while Mackenzie King put it less concerning:
“..We must seek to keep this part of ..Continent free from unrest and from too great an intermixture of foreign strains of blood ..and by creating an internal problem in an effort to meet an international one.” Mackenzie King.
On March 22nd 1938 President Roosevelt has issued invitations to 33 National delegates to attend The Evian Congress. Amidst suggestions Roosevelt was seeking to deflect World attention away from his own policy in relation to accepting more Jews into America. The strength of criticism of American intolerances that severely limited the quota of Jewish refugees admitted to the United States. The conference, which is meant to assist those Jews gravelly impacted by the escalating Jewish Refugee situation. On March 23rd 1938, and with Jewish community organizations, within Hitler’s Reich being no longer recognised, the compression of Jewish life is further impeded. Then, on July 2nd 1938 40,000 Austrian Jews are taken into protective custody, to suggest Austria too is on a collision course toward its Jews also facing oblivion.

All are meant to meet and discuss the growing crisis for Jews under Hitler’s yoke. In all actuality, they would sort out absolutely nothing for the Jewish People! Eventually also, Evian is to hand Hitler a defining moment in the confirmation that he has captured the very mood of indifference toward the Jewish People. #I – Thursday July 14th 1938 “..Jews for Sale ..Bargain price. Who Wants Them. No One.” Reichswart German Paper.
Also, Pope Pius XI is politically displeased and shares a hope that the Italian leader Benito Mussolini would not be inadvertently influenced by Hitler. However, an Italian Manifesto of the Racial Scientists is issued which suggests otherwise, and this is barely 5 months after Mussolini declared he did not envisage a Jewish Problem. On July 15th 1938 The Evian Conference ends with none of those present unwilling, and or unable to resolve the major issue, and that is to admit large numbers of Jewish refugees into their nations. Tragically, those Jews who are facing an increasing weight of abuse and isolation, are further discriminated against. After 10 days of absent deliberation, the Jews under direct threat from Hitler must now certainly feel even more abandoned. Only for the Dominican Republic, which agreed to accept up to 100,000 Jewish Refugees, would present any sense of moral probity, and exerted itself to deliver such an ethical response. Even Roosevelt had not even adopted any initiative to improve Jewish access into America. To be clear though, the US Government had agreed that the German and Austrian exit strategy, an immigration quota of some 30,000 Jewish People per year, would be extended to, and made available to any Jewish Refugees. Britain agreed to accept some 30,000 German Jews, Australia agreed to take 5,000 per year over a three year period, South Africa would only take those Jews who had resident ties with the Country through close relatives, Canada refused to make any commitment to take Jewish Refugees, though accepted a few refugees over a few years. Costa Rica had eventually delivered some hope to the Jewish Refugees, while France had declared itself saturated by Refugees. Such sentiment was echoed by many other national States as Jewish organisations remained fixated upon entry into Israel, at a cost many stated of imposing a moral crisis upon those states refusing to assist the Jewish People.

On July 21st 1938 those Jews in Germany are made to apply for identity cards and on then again July 25th 1938, The Medical Certification of Jewish physicians is cancelled. On July 30th 1938 Henry Ford receives the Grand Cross of the German Eagle from the Third Reich. This then is Recalling what Canada, and their representatives thought. Such is the discourse, by those better placed to know and understand, still found a vocal entreaty that would only add a later voice of dissent. Knowledgeable as to the very struggles that the Jewish Refugee faced, humanity was an unconcerned essence we are incredulous of to this day.

But we are not as yet finished with international delegations, who used every facet of this junket to disown any plausible concern. There were then Murmurings from the French contingent, as they made it clear, more Jews were to become an unwanted species in their lands. As the Jews of Germany are being restricted and more fully marginalised, that escalation is certainly seen more radically in 1938.

Hitler stood on his veritable hate fuelled stage though, and he was to be enthralled by such spectacle as would suggest, No One Wants Jews in Their Lands. And he didn’t shy away from pointing to such inhuman stressed opinions and treatment. All of which he endorsed, the noise emanating from the bleating mouths of so called progressive humanists. Much of the result at Evian was reflected in the failure of the entire conference was that the Jewish People had no escape route and were to be continually harried by Hitler.
“..I can only hope and expect that ..other World ..which has such deep sympathy for these criminal Jews ..will at least be generous enough to convert this sympathy into practical aid. We ..on our part ..are ready to put all these criminals at ..disposal of these Countries ..for all I care ..even on luxury ships.” Adolf Hitler.
However, for the Jews of The Promised Land, their sole emphasis was in exclaiming the lack of a voice raised in their name. In certain hope that what was being fully engaged in, the abandonment of the Jews took on a more radical unconcern. Those, supposedly concerned by the Refugee Jewish crisis, they could not be allowed to resonate with such concern as should have been rendered in the Jewish name. When we place much of this in context, we identify with what emerged from the Evian Conference, and as we reflect upon what emerged from the mouth of the Australian delegate on Refugees, Thomas Walter White, the abject failure of Evian is brought into stark relief.

When Remembering Australia, and with this, its damnable declaration, Golda Meir points the finger at reprehensible beings of human extraction. This is of an accusation at such an immoral, inhuman and degrading comment, by any delegate, it marks further the inhumanity we are yet to witness. The Refugee Conference called for by President Roosevelt is convened at Evian, becomes a marker in what Hitler recognises is a World’s unwillingness to intercede on behalf of European Jewry. As 33 Nations invited turn up to meet and discuss the growing crisis for Jews under Hitler’s yoke, the desire to make a concerted effort is neglected! As if the Jews don’t feel isolated enough, or even abandoned completely, Hitler has captured the mood of the World to their predicament. If we are then to proscribe to Hitler, what he finally managed to achieve, then during his race toward The Final Solution, the Jewish abandonment at Evian becomes pivotal. Also, when Nations who were invited to this conference, and who actually turned up, each nation sought to evade their human responsibility in the approaching storm. As 250,000 Germans are continuously abused for being Jews, the World of nations took no steps to alleviate Jewish concerns which in turn bolstered Hitler’s resolve to act with apparent impunity.

Therefore we do not want to create a Jewish problem by allowing these Jews to come in.” Golda Meir.
I cannot begin to imagine what it must have been like, for a spokesperson for her Jewish People to sit silently. But Golda Meir represented more than her Jewish People, she opened our eyes and ears to a chasm of intolerable indifference to their struggles. This, by a World riven with unconcern would lead to 6,000,000 unmistakable tragedies. 6,000,000 Slaughtered Jews. While today the World reflects upon The Holocaust, it doesn’t do so any longer to an exclusive placement of the Jews of Europe selectively chosen for such destruction as remains in conceivable.

This abandonment is then reflected in a News Paper article the day before the Evian Conference ends. What we meet here and seek to discuss, as the growing crisis for Jews under Hitlers yoke strangles further the Jewish ability to manoeuvre, and while Hitler was well along that measured route and toward the enormous atrocity that will be exhibited before history, we abandoned the Jewish People.

When, on July 15th 1938 The Evian Conference ends, and while none of those present could resolve the major issue, to admit large numbers of Jewish refugees into safe keeping, the Jews of Germany and Austria are fully abandoned. Increasingly these Jewish People are facing such weight of severe abuse, this all combines with their now perceived further isolation. The step up into the merest suggestion to the Jews of all of Europe, and that they are now fully abandoned, must totally disrupt any sense of civilised community the Jews assumed they were any part of. One would need to dig deeper to find out if any pressure was placed on merely not mentioning the Jews, or in fact if the process was set in place so as Not to accept Jews.
“..Sitting in that wonderful hall listening to ..representatives of ..countries standing up one after another and explaining how terribly glad they would be to receive a larger number of refugees and how terribly sorry they were that they unfortunately could not was a shattering experience.” Golda Meir.
It is clear though, that these conferees are not talking about the Jews, and are discussing merely refugees displaced from all that confronts the Jewish People. I’ve trawled through the Evian motions, decisions, edicts and promulgations, and I have no wish to add deeper to the despair for the Jewish People, abandoned so callously and left behind. For such a failure of leadership, to equip itself in a humanistic manner in securing for the Jews of Europe, a human resolution, the reverie and toasts to each of them, is an appalling indictment of inhumanity at its ground level. For me, Evian has sod all to do with the role of saving Jews from Hitler. and as Evian remains incomplete, that is because it is insincere. The over-reaching aim at Evian was to deliver Jews away from Hitler. However, the overall result from Evian was to deliver back to Hitler what Hitler had demanded, with the dismantling of Jewish existence, came the end of their lives. Throughout the Summer of 1938 then, more than 15,000 Jews are arrested all across Germany and are termed as a-socials.
Friday July 15th 1938 “..delegates take ..floor to say ..We feel sorry for ..refugees and potential refugees but.” The Washington Post.
Gaining momentum, and coming closer to what die Endlosung der Judenfrage will engage in, on August 8th 1938 the use of Gassing Vans is utilised to murder inmates of asylums and disablement centres. As the Jews of Germany are being restricted and more fully marginalised, and that escalation is certainly seen more radically in 1938, on September 27th 1938 Dr. Heinrich Rothmund, the Swiss Chief of Police of the Swiss Federal Justice Ministry, who seeks to stem the flood of Jewish refugees entering Switzerland, meets with Werner Best of the Gestapo, and Gustav Roediger of the German Foreign Office to sign the Red letter ‘J’ decree. Also, in September 1938, both Britain and France delivered for Hitler even more Jews to be placed under threat by acceding to Hitler’s demands to enter, and occupy the Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia. When on October 5th 1938 the dreaded ‘J’ stamp agreement is made, this places Jews in further harms way purely by identifying them immediately to German eyes. This ‘Jew’ mark, which will appear on all German Jewish Passports, is finally realised and it is a radical identifier of the Jewish People. The idea from Dr. Rothmund, who had clearly recognised at the Evian Conference that all too few nations would assist the Jews in their hour of coming need, ensured Switzerland too had joined the Abandonment of the Jews. This, often times termed a ‘Badge of Honour’, for that is what it must be recognised as, was also a symbol of the terrible purpose in identifying a People.

As History will recognise, this identifier was so as to speed along the Jewish quarterising from the body of any community, and is a racist symbol and deeply antisemitic. Meanwhile, on October 6th 1938 the Polish Government revokes all passports of its Jewish Citizens who have been resident outside of Poland for over 5 years. This then culminates soon after when, on October 28th 1938 Germany expels 17,000 Polish Jews to Poland’s border, 8,000 Jews are left stranded at Zbaszyn, neither admitted by Poland and not allowed back into Germany, the Jews are stateless.
Saturday October 29th 1938 ” ..shall ..take ..Jewish Question toward its total solution. ..total elimination.” das Schwarze Korps.
On November 9th 1938 Ernst vom Rath dies and Hitler authorizes Goering to deal with all Jewish political issues. The Night of Broken Glass, ‘Kristallnacht’, proceeds orchestrated throughout Germany, Austria and the Sudetenland. Some 267 synagogues are ransacked and destroyed, 7,500 Jewish Shops looted and over 50,000 Jews are removed to the Concentration Camps at Dachau, Buchenwald and Sachsenhausen. Over 240 Jews are killed as Hitler formally now endorses The Madagascar Plan.

Preparations ..for ..arrest of between 20,000 and 30,000 Jews. Wealthy Jews in particular. ..Jews ..found in possession of weapons ..most severe measures ..to be taken.” Heinrich Muller.
It is clear, and on February 28th 1939 with the Times of London reporting on the coming situation for the Jewish situation, the British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, put forward his own wish to appease Hitler. All that had emerged from the posturing of Evian was now coming further along to both taunt the Jewish People, and then secure for them a terminal position within the failed mindset of European states. Hitler was in his element and knowing full well that everything he had proposed for Jewish non-existence was gaining traction, was coming closer to fruition and would indeed bear fruit. In March 1939 as the mandated territory was being brought into sharp focus, it was clear that Britain, and even the Jewish People began to realize this too, Britain was planning to close the opportunities for Jewish access to their Spiritual Homeland. Indeed, not even the immigrant target that was to be set for their introduction, for any more Jews to enter their Homeland, was ignored. What would be assessed, while it was eventually confined to a drop in the proverbial ocean of Jewish despair, left the despair of the Jews of Europe terminally impacted.

Just weeks before the British government issued the White Paper, on the position of the trans-Jordan Palatinate, Polish Jewry was utterly despairing. World Jewry was seeking to have a larger input into checking the erosion of the dire position for them, as European Jewry was building a hugely sought escape, and as more of them sought refugee status out of Poland, and even Europe. The more urgent request was to ensure the newer Exodus should be more fully accommodated onto their ancestral lands. It stands as a reminder here that The Promised Land served as The Holy Land for both Christian and Jewish Faiths for over 2,000 years. The prospect that had awaited the Jewish return to these lands had now been in existence, and with a persistence that stretched back for over 5,000 years, was now both a moral and ethical issue, and critically so in the years to come. On March 17th 1939, both Polish Jewish representative bodies, the Agudas Israel and the United Zionist Organization, were urged in desperation, to approach the British Prime Minister, and even beg his assistance so as to maintain an escape route for the Jewish People. What this sought to resolve could have taken so many more of the Jewish People, away from a burgeoning Hitlerite threat to them, that could have saved even more from the over 6,000,000 Jewish losses.

The British though, who all but placed an embargo upon that Jewish return, was rather conforming to the strains of Evian still leaking into the area of unconcern. While bowing down to Arab pressures, this position was to allow the Arab states a situation which virtually spoke more aggressively of Muslim colonisation. Under the auspices of the British White Paper too, Jewish immigration was to be limited to 15,000 Jews each year, only allowing entry for the Jewish People over the coming five years. After such a time period, any Jewish entry would then require an Arab consent which could be orchestrated immediately as a permanently negative construct. In what amounts to a rather prophetic statement too, Chaim Wiezmann, who was meeting with agents of the British mandatory group, and was teamed alongside David Ben-Gurion, were both pleading with the British government not to turn their backs upon European Jewry.

Britain though had fully cowed down to Arab pressure, as the Jewish People were emerging after a constant run of attacks upon them during the preceding 3 to 4 years, with little hope of countering this. The Arab Higher Committee, representing the local Arabs, were wholly opposed to any influx of any more of European Jewry. At this juncture, Arab demands, and Evian failings came together as Haj Amin Al-Husseini, the grand mufti of Jerusalem, was directing assaults against the Jewish People which came to ensure more than 300 Jews would be Dead over this period. Hitler’s demand was no doubt falling upon fertile soil, and here even Eichmann must have previously sewn the seeds of Hitler’s directive for die Endlosung der Judenfrage. Also, and while there was no land to be sold to Jews, under mandatory conditions, the Jews were otherwise restricted in dealing with the Arab population. This recognised but would not preclude the Jews from purchasing the very heritage of Their Promised Lands from will Arab sellers. There continued being Jewish purchases of great swathes of their ancestral home as Hitler was full of a certainty that he had carte-blanche to deal with the Jews as he wished. On July 4th 1939 Hitler now ensured that Jews could not be employed in Government positions as German Jewry was to be placed under authority of the Reich Association of Jews, Reichsvereingung der Juden im Deutschland, answerable to Hitler. On July 26th 1939 Adolf Eichmann would take charge of the Prague Emigration Office, virtually seeing his position evolving into being in charge of all anti-Jewish measures Hitler demanded.

The failure of Evian had opened the flood gates into which poured the very lives of an abandoned Jewish People fully at the mercy of a Hitler who proved merciless toward over 6,000,000 of them. What appears from the midst of the whole saga, from Evian to the Arab partnership in Waffen SS details, was the systematic killing of the Jews in Europe and across the Middle East. All of this sheds a mirky suspicion that Hitler was working in consort with an apathetic World of Indifference toward the Jewish struggle. That struggle would emerge in the immediacy of an arrival of The Holocaust when 100’s of 1,000’s of Surviving Jews were under direct threat, and were clearly desperate to survive. Immediately, and as they were being Murdered, inhumanity was approaching the previous front doors to civilisation. Then, and after all the Jews were put into harms way, those who then survived, while now living in Allied Concentration Camps, this was such a moral affront to humanity which did not recognise the Jewish predicament as they had finally emerged from both Concentration Camps, and even Death Camps.
